We often find travellers confused about which area to pick for their first time in Bali. Each place has its own character that makes it special. Kuta, Legian and Seminyak are three neighbouring areas in the heart of Bali's busiest tourist zone. Understanding the differences between them can help to pick the right base for your stay. There's nightlife if you want it, but it's mostly shut down by midnight. Legian feels like a sweet spot where we can unwind but stay close to the action.

Getting the basics right helps you to enjoy your Bali trip without too much stress or hassle. Here are some practical tips we've picked up along the way, for important aspects of your stay.

Accommodation Options

Bali accommodation ranges in price and style.

From hostels to 5-star resorts, these areas have it all. In Kuta, budget stays dominate, great for travelers watching their spending. Legian offers mid-range hotels and guesthouses for a more relaxed feel. Seminyak is the go-to for luxury resorts and boutique hotels that pamper. Most booking sites have reviews and ratings, and it pays to read them so you know what you're getting. If you do happen to end up in accommodation that isn't up to standard, don't just put up with it. Usually, staff are very accommodating and will do whatever they can to rectify issues. If it's not fixable, don't be afraid to speak up, ask for a refund, and change accommodation. Don't let it put a dampener on your holiday!

Dining and Nightlife

Eating in Bali ranges from street-side warungs serving up tasty local dishes to elegant beachfront restaurants offering international cuisine. Night markets and street food spots are lively and cheap, while Seminyak’s restaurants impress with gourmet menus. For a real variety of options all in one place, head to Legian Food Court. Here you will find dozens of warungs serving a huge variety of delicious local and international dishes at absolute rock bottom prices.

Be aware that many establishments charge ++ - they have a tax and service charge on top of the menu price that can be up to 21%, so factor that in when you're checking out the menu. There are literally hundreds of warungs and restaurants to try in the area and most are pretty great. But our ultimate favourites we return to again and again:

La Monde Restaurant also on Jl Padma Utara - upstairs opposite the Y Bar. Seafood mixed grill every time for me!

Nightlife thrives in all three areas, but each has a different style: Kuta’s clubs are party-heavy, Legian offers laid-back bars, and Seminyak features upscale lounges. If you're into live music, try Billy's 69 Bar, Legends Bar or Chubby Rabbit on Garlic Lane, or Summer Queen on Jl Padma.

Shopping and Convenience Stores

Kuta’s markets buzz with bargain hunters hunting for souvenirs and brand name knock-offs.

Many local sellers will barter with you for a good price, and some will try to sell you things for 100 x what they're worth. Others run fixed price shops (these are our preference). Legian and Seminyak balance markets with boutique shops selling designer labels and unique handmade goods. Convenience stores including MiniMarts, Circle K, Indomaret and independents are scattered everywhere, stocking essentials like snacks, toiletries, and phone credits, perfect for grabbing last-minute needs. For a bigger shop, head to Bintang Supermarket where you'll find everything you need.

Money Exchange and ATMs

We find reliable money changers in all three areas, often offering competitive rates. It is important to be selective here though as there have been many stories of people being ripped off by a dodgy money changer. We stick to operators who have an actual shopfront, usually with a glass front and airconditioning. Avoid following signs that direct you down the back of a dark market stall or laneway and if the rate seems too good to be true - it probably is. ATMs are common but again, there have been stories of skimming and cards being swallowed. Using those in busy tourist spots is safest, and those located in the

front of a bank is even better. Be aware that your bank, and possibly the ATM's bank may charge a fee - check your own bank's terms and conditions to make sure it's not costing you a fortune. We personally use ATM's while in Bali almost exclusively (we rarely change money) and have not had an issue in over 14 trips. Our last trip (May 2025) we found BNI to be the best for fees and used the atm located at the bank on Jl Legian near Kencana Art Market. Carrying smaller bills for daily purchases and tips is wise and always keep an eye on your belongings when handling cash.

Laundry Services

Laundry services abound and are inexpensive—don't be fooled into paying the price per piece rate at your hotel! You can usually find a service who will do your laundry for 15000 - 25000 Rp a kilo and some will even pick up and drop back to your hotel.

Transport Options

Scooters are very popular in Bali for short trips, though we would absolutely not recommend hiring one yourself if you're not an experienced, licenced rider on busy Bali roads. If you are going to do this, be aware that you won't be covered by insurance if you don't hold the equivalent motorbike licence in your own country, an international drivers permit, wear a helmet and not be under the influence of alcohol or drugs in the event of an accident. You should also check that your insurance covers motorbikes - add ons may need to be purchased.

Metered taxis (Bluebird) and ride-sharing apps like Grab and Gojek offer safer and hassle-free rides, especially for first-timers. These can be linked to your cards in the same way Uber is, meaning no cash needed, and have built in safety protocols. Walking is pleasant in the mornings and afternoons but in the peak of the heat often an airconditioned car is the only way to go! Traffic can become quite congested in the early evenings as people are heading out for dinner and drinks so be prepared to either walk, or spend a long time sitting in traffic for what would otherwise be a pretty short trip.

Staying Connected

Buying a local SIM card is cheap and offers good data packages to keep maps and booking apps handy. Esims are also great value and less hassle than swapping your own sim out. Airalo is a reliable option with plans for most countries. Telkomsel is an Indonesian network that is very reliable and has both eSIM and physical sim plans available to travellers.

Keeping safe means staying aware. Scams exist, but avoiding deals that sound too good to be true usually keeps us clear of trouble. Personal safety is generally good, but we always watch our drinks in crowded spots, keep an eye on belongings, and avoid isolated areas at night. Being respectful and following local rules also goes a long way toward ensuring your stay is trouble free.
